Rubyology Podcast Interview

Posted by ezmobius Mon, 23 Jun 2008 02:06:00 GMT

Chris Matthieu and Steven Bristol interviewed me for the Rubyology Podcast a few days ago and they have posted the interview here. I talk about my early days of computing, merb, vertebra, rubinius and the story behind how Engine Yard got started and has grown. I’ll warn you though it’s a long interview, 120 minutes! Have a listen if you want to hear the story.

What do you want to see in mod_rubinius?

Posted by ezmobius Tue, 12 Feb 2008 00:25:00 GMT

So we are just getting started on mod_rubinius here at EY. We’ve hired Eero Saynatkari ( rue in the #rubinius irc channel) full time to work on the project.

The architecture for mod_rubinius is still up in the air at this point. We do know that it will be rack based so the interface from mod_rubinis into ruby apps will be via rack. Other then that we don’t yet know what the best way to architect the platform will be. It could be an embeded rubinius VM inside the apache processes. Or it could be a process manager that manages separate rubinius VM’s, or a combination of both of these approaches.

We would like to hear from you folks.. What would you like to see in a mod_rubinius? How is deployment of ruby apps painful for you and how would you like it to work in a perfect world?

We’d appreciate some feedback so please leave feature requests and ideas in the comments.

The new Rubinius Team

Posted by ezmobius Wed, 05 Dec 2007 23:58:00 GMT

We’re having a Rubinius Sprint here at Engine Yard’s new San Francisco headquarters this week. Lot’s of great hacking going on. I’m am super excited about the future of Rubinius.

But the awesome news is that Ryan Davis (zenspider) and Eric Hodel (drbrain) have been officially hired to work on Rubinius full time along with Evan.

And Starting in January, Wilson Bilkovich (Defiler) and Brian Ford (brixen) will also start doing paid work on rubinius.

I feel that rubinius has a very important role to play in the future of Ruby as a language. I can’t say enough how stoked I am that EngineYard is able to do this. We were just a tiny startup with 6 servers a year and a half ago ;)

Go Rubinius!

EngineYard hires Evan Phoenix to work on Rubinius

Posted by ezmobius Thu, 24 May 2007 03:40:00 GMT

I’m really stoked about this. I think rubinius has so much potential that I am really happy to be able to support it. Starting next month Evan Phoenix is going to be working here at EY half time on ey tools and such and half time on rubinius.

For those of your who aren’t familiar with rubinius you can read a bit more about it here. It’s a new implementation of ruby done in a smalltalk style with a small core VM written in C and almost everyting else written in ruby. Really, even String and Array and definied in ruby. Rubinius is going to open up core ruby hacking to the masses as the internals won’t be a bunch of gnarly C code thats really hard to grasp.

There is still a lot of work to get rubinius to 1.0 status but hopefully hiring Evan will help speed the process. I think we have a great platform to abuse rubinius on here at EY to help it become production worthy.

I love my job folks. I get to play on phat hardware and get to hire some of the smartest hackers around. This is great!

Rubinius FTW!
