Engine Yard Express

I’d like to point folks to our new Engine Yard Express VMWare image. This is a replica of an EY slice that you can download and use locally whether you are an EY customer or not. When you boot it up it will autotune mysql to use the proper amount of ram, boot up a merb and a rails app along with nginx and monit et all. It will give you a user/pass and show you the IP address as part of the boot process. So just boot it up and peek at the IP address on port 80 and port 81, the index pages of the rails and the merb app have detailed instruction on how to get a deploy.rb and deploy your own code.

Enjoy!

Very cool stuff. Downloading now to give it a run-through. Not sure if EC2 supports VMWare images but I'm guessing it's not totally unthinkable to convert a VMWare image over to an EC2 image. Didn't really see a license for use over at the site but I'm guessing everything's cool as long as it's not sold as a package or something?

This is great. I'm just starting to get back into some rails/merb projects. great timing and appreciate the package :) Extracting now.

Why a VMWare image as opposed to Xen?

@Zack: A VMware image because it's intended to be easily used on your laptop, and not intended to be run on your server at some other hosting company. They're giving you a nice gift, but they're not trying to encourage you to use a different hosting company. (That being said, the main thing you're paying for with EY is the brains of the people who are there to help you *when* you need it. So even if you cloned this configuration on slicehost, it's still an apples to guavas comparison. Apples are great, but guavas are mind-bogglingly awesome.)

That's absolutely amazing. You guys continually impress me with your open stance about things. And that karma is good for business... I just bought my first slice!

This is awesome. Brandon makes a good point about not offering a Xen based image, but what about a Parallels based one? As a Mac user I'd love to have something I could run on my laptop for testing.

Hi Ezra, great book btw. Running VMware Server Console 1.0.5 and it was not able to load your VM. If you try to open the config file it says that the configuration file was created by a VMware product with more features than this version which is a version issue I think. thx rtg
